How to stay healthy on long haul flights: Here are tips to manage blood sugar, heart health and asthma | Health and Wellness News

The holiday season often involves long flights to reunite with loved ones or explore new destinations. While air travel is generally safe, those with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, lung ailments, or allergies need to take extra precautions. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you stay healthy and comfortable during your journey.

Diabetes Management: Travelling can disrupt routines but careful planning helps keep blood sugar levels in check. Consult your doctor to adjust medication or insulin schedules, especially if crossing time zones.

Carry extra insulin, syringes or pens in your hand luggage, along with a recent prescription. Pack snacks like nuts or granola bars to prevent hypoglycemia as airline meals may not always align with your needs.
During the flight, avoid dehydration, which can affect blood sugar levels. Walk around the cabin every 1–2 hours to improve circulation. Monitor blood sugar, especially on long-haul flights.

Heart Health: People with heart conditions should be cautious about immobility and pressure changes in the cabin. Discuss travel plans with your cardiologist and ask if compression stockings are suitable for you.

Keep emergency medications, such as nitroglycerin, readily accessible.

Avoid heavy meals and alcohol, as these can exacerbate symptoms. Perform simple leg exercises, like ankle rolls, to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Use pillows or supports to keep yourself comfortable and reduce strain on the heart.

Lung Conditions: The dry cabin air and changes in pressure can trigger symptoms for those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Consult your doctor about using supplemental oxygen if needed. Many airlines can accommodate this with advance notice. Carry a copy of your oxygen prescription and enough inhalers or nebulizers for the trip.

Use your inhaler before boarding if advised by your doctor. Avoid exposure to strong odours or perfumes that may trigger attacks. Practise controlled breathing techniques to manage discomfort during pressure changes.

Allergies and Anaphylaxis: From food allergies to environmental triggers, air travel can present unique challenges. Notify the airline of your food allergies in advance and confirm meal options. Pack antihistamines, epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens), or any necessary medications in your carry-on. Bring hypoallergenic pillow cases or wipes if you’re sensitive to cleaning agents used on aircraft.

Avoid eating airline food if you’re unsure of ingredients; bring your own snacks instead. Inform the flight crew about your condition so they can assist if needed.

General Tips for All Travelers with Chronic Conditions: Stay hydrated. Cabin air is typically low in humidity, which can lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water but limit caffeine and alcohol. Wear loose, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes to reduce swelling and ease movement. Always store essential medications in your carry-on luggage in their original containers to avoid delays at security checks.

Carry a medical alert card with details of your condition, medications and emergency contacts.
Once you land, take time to rest and acclimatise, especially if you’ve crossed time zones. Stick to your regular medication schedule and continue monitoring your condition. By planning ahead and staying vigilant, you can enjoy a stress-free and healthy holiday season.
