While becoming a new parent is incredibly rewarding, it’s no secret that navigating parenthood can be overwhelming for both mums and dads. Many new or expectant dads experience stress, anxiety or depression, and often bear the feelings alone until it becomes severe.
That’s exactly why Brews, Bowls + Bubs was created. Designed by Counsellor and Psychotherapist Liam Bennett and his wife Emilee Bennett, the founders of Earthside Australia, Brews, Bowls + Bubs is all about supporting new and expectant dads with real-world tools, good food, and a friendly game of bowls. The event is aimed at people who are either expecting a baby or have had one in the last six months.
“There are so many support groups and resources for mums, but we noticed there’s not much out there for dads,” says Emilee.
“We saw a gap and wanted to create something that helps men feel seen and prepared, mentally and emotionally. We also recognise that dads who are informed and emotionally supported are better able to support their partners and children.”
Taking over The RiverDome in Thebarton, the evening starts at 6pm with a relaxed overview of what to expect during labour, before diving into practical mental health support. The goal is to help dads recognise signs of stress, anxiety or depression and give them tools to cope.
“One of the key tools we’re sharing is called the STOP technique. It’s a skill that encourages people to pause, take a breath, observe their thoughts and feelings, then proceed mindfully rather than just reacting,” Emilee explains.
So, what does the class include?
- Learn how to support your partner through childbirth and postpartum
- Gain healthy coping tools for dealing with stress
- Recognise signs of postnatal anxiety and depression
- Take home a “Partner Support Kit” (valued at $29.95)
- Enjoy a pizza dinner
- Wrap up with a friendly game of bowls
Everyone who attends receives a support kit packed with a cheat sheet of five partner-supported labour positions, things to say “when you don’t know what to say,” toiletries, snacks, and even a surprise gift for mum.
The bowls and the brews come in to help dads feel comfortable, creating a casual, no-pressure environment for conversation and connection.
“Men don’t typically like to sit and talk – and that’s why we had the bowls activity. That, paired with a couple of beers, helps open the conversation. It was meant to be a bit of fun but also an opportunity to meet other people and open up,” explains Emilee.
Whether you’re a dad-to-be or deep in the newborn trenches, Brews, Bowls + Bubs offers low-pressure support, practical tools, and the chance to meet other men navigating the same life chapter.
For those wanting to continue the conversation, Liam also offers individual counselling sessions, and a private Facebook group for attendees will also be launched to help everyone stay connected after the event.
